Authorities have released new information about the man accused of shooting three Philadelphia police officers during a confrontation in the city’s Wynnefield neighborhood on Saturday night. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Eric Franks, was fatally shot during the incident, which remains under active investigation.
According to police, the shooting occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of 54th and Arlington streets. Officers had responded to reports of a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire and were in the process of securing the area when they encountered Franks.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said officers were attempting to explain the establishment of a crime scene when an altercation developed. Investigators allege that Franks shoved a police sergeant, prompting officers to move in to detain him. During the struggle, police say Franks produced a legally owned 9mm handgun and opened fire, striking three officers.
One officer suffered a gunshot wound to the face, another was shot in the hip, and a third was struck in the leg. Despite their injuries, the wounded officers, along with a fourth uninjured officer, returned fire. Franks was hit in the chest and leg and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Loved ones describe Franks as a retired firefighter with 19 years of service, a Marine Corps veteran, and the owner of two nearby businesses. Family representatives have expressed shock over the incident, saying the behavior described by police was out of character and raising questions about what led to the fatal confrontation.
Investigators recovered nearly 50 pieces of ballistic evidence from the scene. Authorities also confirmed that preliminary findings indicate Franks was not connected to the original shooting that officers were investigating when they arrived.
The three injured officers are expected to recover, and officials say they remain in good spirits as the investigation continues.
