Authorities in Rockland County are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that left a New Jersey driver dead early Sunday morning on the ramp from Interstate 287 North to the New York State Thruway in Hillburn.
According to New York State Police, the crash occurred when a vehicle driven by Guido De Castro, a resident of New Jersey, struck the rear of an SUV that had come to a stop on the ramp. The impact of the collision caused significant damage and resulted in fatal injuries for De Castro.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and transported De Castro to a nearby hospital in Suffern, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two occupants inside the SUV that was struck sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both were evaluated and treated following the incident. Authorities have not released further details regarding their identities or current conditions.
The crash led to temporary disruptions in traffic along the ramp as investigators worked to secure the scene and document evidence. Officials spent several hours examining roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and other factors as part of the ongoing investigation.
State Police have not yet determined whether speed, distraction, or other contributing factors played a role in the collision. The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather information to establish a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the crash.
Local authorities emphasized that crashes involving stopped or slowed vehicles on highway ramps can present serious hazards, particularly during periods of increased traffic or limited visibility.
The tragic incident has left one man dead and two others injured, underscoring the dangers present on high-speed roadway transitions.
Further updates are expected as investigators complete their review and additional details become available.
